Dr. Ralph Greenson, the star of Hollywood psychoanalysts, treated Marilyn Monroe for fifteen months until her August 1962 suicide. He saw her seven days a week and brought her into his home. He never got over losing her. Written by a practicing psychoanalyst, The Misfit recounts this tragic alliance and Marilyn Monroe’s borderline personality.

The Misfit Single eBook Steven Poser

I have been a rabid reader of all things related to Marilyn Monroe since I was a teenager, so I was excited to find this Kindle Single about her.

While the writing is clear and concise, I have to say that it just creeped me out that a psychiatrist would attempt to "adopt" a grown, extremely troubled woman in an effort to "save" her. That he even kept her from being hospitalized when he clearly knew she should be and this move may have played a big part in her death really bothered me. I came away feeling that the doctor broke down all types of healthy boundaries of his own and did so knowingly, probably because he was in love with her, not because she was so broken and he was trying to model a healthy family life for her.

Still, it was a time of learning in the psych field, as well as in the culture as a whole. In truth, there was probably nothing that would change the ending of this troubled soul's life. I did pick up some facts that I hadn't known about her previously and found the article to be well written and well documented.

All around, this article gave me much to think about, and I give the author kudos for doing such a good job of presenting this great, if disturbing, glimpse into this relationship and condensing so much of her life into such clear, concise writing. It would be great to have a full book on this subject that delves even deeper into this tragic relationship between doctor and patient.

The Misfit Single eBook Steven Poser Reviews

I've always felt sorry for Marilyn Monroe, but never knew how her own background and her unfortunate choice of a psychiatrist precipitated her ultimate failure to survive. The details are sad and tragic, and as her weaknesses became clear thanks to Steven Poser's excellent research, I was moved to pray for her. Poser is very even-handed in his descriptions of her relationships, especially with her psychiatrist, but it's easy to see how the best intentions of those around her weren't enough to overcome her unrelenting self doubt and isolation.
I can think of no other person who was so able to stir simulataneous feelings of lust and nurturing as Marilyn Monroe. Part innocent little girl and part lavicious seductress, Marilyn was a legend.

So, too, were her battles with mental illness which were played out against the harsh lights of Hollywood. By the time Marilyn died of a drug overdose in August 1962, she had been in and out of psychoanalysis a number of times. This Single focuses on her last therapeutic relationship with Ralph Greenson.

Greenson's idea of therapy for Marilyn involved bringing her into his home. Literally. The idea behind the unusual therapy was to provide her with stability that had been denied her as a child. Eventually the movie star began to take over more aspects of Greenson's life, moving from three to five to seven sessions a week (some plasting as long as five hours). Greenson even returned early from a European vacation with his family during Monroe's legendary problems on the set of Something's Got the Give, not long before her death.

For those who have followed Monroe's life, there is not much in the way of new information offered here. The heart of the story is her last psychotherapist's attempts to reach the girls inside the woman who described herself as a "waif" and a "lost child." Ultimately that attempt failed. Not only was Marilyn lost, but Greenson was himself devastated by her death. Though he never spoke publically about Monroe's death, his letters to friends and colleagues hint at the depth of his despair.

While The Misfit makes for an interesting story, causual readers may be put off by the abundance of psychoanalyitcal parlance. If you're not familiar with words like "transference" or "borderline personality," then you will probably struggle through this relatively brief Single. There's a fascinating story here and it peeks out from behind the medical and academic terms from time to time ... just not enough times to truly recommend this work for the average reader.
it was a well written book, it gave even more details then most people new about. she did have alot of problems, probably more made by her. she was so afraid of losing someone and holding on to people. finding love does take alot of give and take. growing up in a orhanage is one of the hardest places to find a real life, and a postive outlook. not having a close family to learn about closeness and love does make a difference. to bad she never was strong enough to find happiness.
Norma Jeane was the archetypical "lost child" always seeking the reassurance and unconditional love that most children secure from their parents. Without that foundation of security, she was both blessed and cursed by her metamorphosis into iconic Marilyn Monroe. While Marilyn could conjure up the adoration that Norma Jeane craved, Norma Jeane always saw Marilyn as a separate person, and spoke of "her" in the third person.
When she consulted psychotherapist Dr Ralph Greenson, he decided she needed "adoption therapy" so she could know the security and warmth of being part of a real family. Dr Greenson recognized that Norma Jeane was dangerously suicidal, so he went to extraordinary lengths to give her support, even cancelling appointments with other patients to rush to her side (I'd like to know that the other patients turned out okay). But he could not save her. She was too broken, empty and self-destructive - a woman who could not enjoy sex but would invite her taxi driver in when he dropped her home; a woman who had countless abortions because she feared her baby would relive Norma Jeane's childhood, but then spent her last years longing for a baby to make Norma Jeane feel like a complete woman; a woman who took handfuls of sleeping pills to no effect because she was afraid of sleeping.
Her relationship with Dr Greenson seems unhealthy and obsessive on his side as much as hers. This story is heartbreaking because there seems to have been no solution, no way of giving Norma Jeane the resilience and security she needed - instead she almost broke the people who tried to help her.
